The Pader, which rises in the middle of the city, has always been of great importance to life in Paderborn. The water was used in many different ways: e.g. for brewing beer, as extinguishing water for fires or to power mills. The water wheel in the Pader spring area is a reminder of the historic waterworks that transported the water to the upper town.
