From half-timbered house to half-timbered house - open-air museum and historic old town

No matter where the car is parked in the large parking lot of the LWL open-air museum, or whether you arrive by bus: We first head towards the museum entrance. Shortly before the ticket booth, the A1 leads us around the grounds to the right, with the fence always on the left. After we have covered a little more than half the distance on the north side, we leave the area of the open-air museum on the A1/A3 to the right into a small wood. At this point, we only follow the "Raute 1"/ Alter Postweg path very briefly and immediately turn left again at the next opportunity (A3). We come to Papenbergweg and walk down the road (A1/A3) to the Palaisgarten, an English landscape garden, at the lower end of which is the Hochschule für Musik.

We turn left at the T-junction and enter the Palaisgarten through the gate on the right. From here you have a beautiful view of the Palais, the home of the world-renowned Hochschule für Musik mentioned above. The palace was built between 1706 and 1718 by Count Friedrich Adolph for his wife Amalie. After the count's death, the baroque building was used as a widow's residence. Between 1847 and 1856, the castle was extended and transformed into a neoclassical palace. It has been home to the Detmold University of Music since 1947.

The palace garden was created in the early 18th century as a French-style parterre garden. It was transformed into an English landscape garden between 1849 and 1865. With its old trees, cascade and more, it is now a listed building and invites young and old to linger in its ambience.

We walk towards the building on one of the paths leading towards the palace, leave the park through the gate on the right-hand side of the building/terrace and turn right onto Gartenstraße. Gartenstraße soon bends to the left and we come to a footpath signposted "Raute 1". The path takes us into the historic old town. We cross the busy Hornsche Straße at the traffic lights in front of the "Lippischer Hof" hotel.

We reach Lange Straße, the start of the pedestrian zone, where there are plenty of opportunities to take a break, and then the market square. The tourist information office is located there.

After approx. 50 m, you will see the entrance to the palace park on the left with the Princely Residence Palace, seat of Prince zur Lippe. A visit to the venerable Weser Renaissance building from the 16th century should be included. The red salon, the ancestral hall and the royal halls with their 8 large tapestries are particularly worth seeing.

We leave the palace park in the direction of the Landestheater, which is now the largest traveling stage in Europe. After passing the gate, we turn left and walk parallel to the castle moat along the Ameide towards the Lippisches Landesmuseum (E1). The replica of the Hermannsdenkmal foot in its original size is worth a visit.

The state museum with its 6 departments, including furniture and interior design as well as regional and cultural history, is ideal for another cultural stopover. It is the oldest regional museum in the Teutoburg Forest region.

From the museum, continue along the E1 over the rampart and the avenue back to the open-air museum. We reach the parking lot via the crossing aid at the "Obere Mühle" (restaurant) and the landscaped area "Parklandschaft Friedrichstal", which begins at the Lippisches Landesmuseum. At the beginning of the 18th century, the park landscape, reconstructed according to the historical model, was the connection from the palace to the palace, which served as a summer palace at the time. For a short time, the canal was used by small boats that took the lords and ladies from the palace to the palace.
