Historic town centre

Amelunxen belongs to the town of Beverungen and is a place steeped in history in the Nethe valley. The village, which was first mentioned in documents in the 9th century, now has around 1,100 inhabitants and, with its historic half-timbered houses, blends in beautifully with the charming landscape along the lower course of the River Nethe.

It owes its name to Amalung, a noble Saxon who remained loyal to Charlemagne during the uprisings of his fellow countrymen. In the 12th century, the Knights of Amelunxen made the area unsafe as robber barons. The confessional battles and the Thirty Years' War also left their mark.

In 1898 and 1899, an electricity plant powered by Nethe water was built here: the second of its kind in Germany. As a result, Amelunxen had access to electricity from 1900 - 20 years before the rest of the district. Numerous associations characterize the lively community life. The Kneipp basin on the Nethe, a barbecue area with a hut and several green spaces invite you to enjoy relaxing leisure activities.

Amelunxen is located directly on the Nethe cycle path R 2, which runs picturesquely for 65 km from Bad Driburg along the Nethe to Höxter.
