From town hall to tobacco house - the Crüwell family were once both tobacco merchants and architects.

The Crüwell family is an architectural family that enhances and brightens up Bielefeld with buildings in the late Gothic style. The builder Johan Crevin erected this participatory house in 1530. In the end, only the beautiful Gothic stepped gables were preserved in the rubble of the war. In 1705, it was acquired by the Kruwel family from Lemgo. They founded Germany's oldest tobacco factory for carving tobacco and rolling tobacco where around 250 people were employed.  Nowadays you can find out everything about tobacco, pipes and more in the Crüwell House. If you take a look at the staircase in Piggenstraße, you will see beautifully preserved Delft tiles decorating the entire staircase.
Come and take a look!
