Waters

A stream that flows in two directions? That exists in Bielefeld! The Ems-Lutter and the Weser-Lutter originate at the source of the Lutter in the Bielefeld district of Brackwede. The Luttertal is a very naturally designed green corridor.

Originally, the Lutter springs flowed southwest towards the Ems. Due to complaints from mill owners, tanners, brewers and other tradesmen about the lack of water in Bielefeld, part of the springs were artificially diverted to the north-east in 1452 so that they flowed through Bielefeld's city center. Today, in terms of water management, there is talk of an Ems-Lutter and a Weser-Lutter. The Lutter became increasingly polluted by domestic and factory wastewater, so that around 1910 the Lutter was piped in the inner city area. Thanks to the pro Lutter e.V. association, sections of the Lutter in the city center have been uncovered again since 2004, offering beautiful places to meet friends, relax and enjoy the cool water in the Park of Human Rights and on Ravensberger Straße.
