Museum/Exhibition

Hammer forge, knife factory and grinding mill

The Gnuse hammer mill, named after its last blacksmith, was first mentioned in a document in 1814. It has been powered by water since 1827 and was expanded in 1831 to include a knife factory and a grinding mill. In 1975, an electrically operated forge hammer was installed, which struck its last blow in 1978 after only a short period of operation.

The Vlotho local history association campaigned to keep the Gnuse forge, which was fully equipped at the time, alive as a "museum in action". Since 1998, visitors have been able to take a journey into the history of the blacksmith's trade. The impressive facility is put into operation on the action days.
