Town hall with Ratskeller

The origins of the town hall date back to the 13th century, but at that time the entrance was further back. It has a stepped gable pierced with quatrefoils and a remarkable Renaissance-style portal on the south side from 1573 with a basket arch and decorated ashlar surround.

If you take a closer look, you will recognise an inscription under the right-hand window dating from around 1400, which is said to have once been placed in the town council and wine cellar (in the town hall). What was once intended as a warning to guests can still be applied today: (translation) "First of all, endeavour to respect the will of God! And in general: Respect the authorities as the bearers of public power! Then the country and its people will remain held in high esteem by the people". In contrast to this is the inscription on the left-hand side of the town hall, which - without the need for translation - very clearly documents Brakel's self-confidence. The original was located on the city's strongest gate, the Thytor.

"O Brokel Du Bist Erenprys; Wo Findt Men Dynes Gliken? In Düdschland So Ne Stad Ni Is; Se Mött Dy Olle Wyken." In (High) German: "O Brakel you are a prize of honour; Where do you find your kind? There's not another town like it in Germany; They must all give way to you."
