Forest, hereditary burial and landscape

The name of the large wooded area of Voßholz refers to the long-time owners of the Böckel estate, the Voß family. The lords of the manor had their patronage church in Rödinghausen, where they could appoint the priest and bury their dead in the church floor. This privilege expired at the end of the 18th century, probably for hygienic reasons. Many a priest is said to have fainted from the pulpit at the rising corpse gases (...). As compensation, the nobles, large farmers and their bourgeois successors were given the right to build their own burial grounds on their estates. The Koenig family's hereditary burial ground is hidden in the middle of the forest near the estate. Family members were buried there from the end of the 19th century, including the now largely unknown poet Hertha Koenig (1884-1976).

On the north-eastern corner of the forest, you have one of the most beautiful panoramic views in the surrounding area. In the deep hollow lies the old Böckel manor, usually half-hidden behind dense foliage. The fertile farmland rises behind it - initially largely free of buildings. Because the land around the estate has been in one hand for so long and still is today, the scattered settlements that are otherwise prevalent in the Ravensberg hill country are absent here.
