Children run riot behind thick castle walls

The Bustedt estate was built 600 years ago by knight Heinrich Ledebur as a moated castle. However, as the land on which he built it belonged to the Herford convent, the knight had to leave the castle just four years later. The abbess of Herford then had the original castle completely demolished and rebuilt according to her own ideas. Around 1650, the castle was converted into a moated castle and given its current appearance.

Since 1982, the estate has been a biology center that offers active environmental education and outdoor biology lessons, especially for schoolchildren. A guest house enables multi-day offers that are booked out for years by school classes from all over NRW. Couples can now get married on the estate. The estate opens its doors to visitors for certain events such as the Christmas market or "The Open Garden". The outdoor area can also be visited at other times.

Further information can be found on the Biology Center's homepage www.gutbustedt.de or at www.fahr-im-kreis.de
