A place of peace and contemplation
The garden of the monastery complex is open at all times.

The monastery was founded in 860 by Walburga as a canon monastery and was granted immunity by Emperor Otto II in 976. In 1208, the abbess Beatrix von Oldenburg had it converted into a Benedictine convent. The convent existed until 1803 and today the buildings are owned by the Princely House of Bentheim-Tecklenburg.

The main building of the convent complex was built in the Renaissance style as a simple stone building. Fragments of the Gothic cloister are preserved on the south façade of the building. The original Romanesque collegiate church was rebuilt as a Gothic nave in 1474. Only the tower remains of the Romanesque building. At the beginning of the last century, the church was converted into a basilica.
