Monument

The "Praying Countryman" stands here under the chestnut trees in red bloom in May. Turned in on himself, he rests on the spade with one foot drawn up. He holds his cap and pipe in his folded hands. He is thanking the Creator and Sustainer of all things for sowing and harvesting.

This pious Westphalian farmer was created around the turn of the century (19th/20th century) by the local sculptor Bernhard Heising. Incidentally, it was the last work before his death. A local historian once said of the bronze figure: "It is not only by far the most beautiful monument in the entire region, but a magnificent work par excellence, with which Heising has returned to the religious mother earth of his art."
