The foundation stone for commercial production was laid to use the positive effect of juniper for heartburn and indigestion in a common medicine.
Juniper - a real piece of Westphalia
Juniper bushes used to characterize the landscape on the southern slope of the Teutoburg Forest. People quickly realized that juniper berries could be used to distil a strong schnapps that kept body and soul together. As a result, the juniper-flavored spirit Steinhäger from the East Westphalian municipality of Steinhagen has become world-famous.
For a long time, juniper was considered old-fashioned and was almost declared dead, but for some years now, the traditional juniper schnapps has been making a real comeback - as gin with many different flavor creations.
Where better to present an exclusive tasting of "spirits with juniper" than in a former Steinhagen distillery - the fascinating "Alte Brennerei" museum?
