Jacob Pins became an early collector and increasingly an expert on so-called pillar prints, the Japanese wooden prints whose traditional function was to decorate wooden pillars in Japanese houses. Pins studied the compositional challenges posed by the format of usually only 73 × 13 cm in detail and published on the subject. The exhibition shows the way in which Asian printmaking also influenced and enriched Jacob Pins' own artistic practice.
